Current Track Plan

In September 2017 the track at the rear of the rockery - dotted line on plan - was lifted after 10 years in position; access to this section was becoming difficult as nature took over, and the curve into the tunnel was just too sharp for easy operation of manual steam locos. The headshunt at Culdaff was extended to run alongside the old loco shed using some of the track lifted from the rear section.
During normal operation of the current track plan, trains depart Carndonagh leave the workshop via the North portal and call at Malin and Aughaclay, terminating at Culdaff and returning by the same route. During steam up days, or when just sitting back and watching the trains go by, continuous running is possible by running trains round the workshop circuit.

Track Plan 2014 - 2017

When the line was extended in 2014, the old layout on the rockery was converted from an oval to a return loop, the line continued through and around the workshop, creating another return loop.
A triangular junction allowed locos and or trains to be reversed if required, and also provided an additional continuous circuit.
It was possible to run trains around the whole layout continuously by utilising both return loops.
